Establishing Mars Capture Orbit

Postby robert.cronin » Wed Aug 13, 2014 1:53 am

I'm currently doing a project on a mission to mars and we're designing the mars capture orbit, but for the epoch we have chosen, we can't seem to come close enough to mars in order to initiate B-plane targeting. We're basing it off the given tutorial and all we've done is change the launch date (8th of Dec 2022 when the 2 planets are at opposition) How would I change the inclination of the plane of orbit in order to come closer to mars while keeping the same epoch?
Cheers

Interesting, Robert! One potential solution (I'm just throwing this out there as an interesting strategy): The last tutorial in the GMAT User's Guide involves using a lunar flyby to change the inclination of an orbit. I'd recommend looking at that tutorial. Obviously, you may have to change your mission timing just slightly just to get everything to line up. I hope this helps!
