Asteroid capture mission

Postby DavideCoco » Thu Apr 10, 2014 12:00 pm

Hi everyone,
i'm italian aerospace student and i'm using GMAT only from two days so i'm a total newbie of this programm.
I'm trying to plot an heliocentric asteroid orbit and then move this asteroid in a circular, and stable, orbit around the earth but there are so much options that i don't know which is the best (and simple) way to do this. Ther's anyone that have a working script, or there's anyone can teach my how to plot an asteroid orbit?
Thanks a lot!

One option is to create an Asteroid resource:
  • Expand SolarSystem
  • Right-click Sun
  • Click Asteroid

But, you need to give it an actual ephemeris as a SPICE file for this to work.

The other option is to create a Spacecraft and pretend it's an asteroid (call it "MyAsteroid", for example). Then you can put it in whatever orbit you want. But in this case, you wouldn't be able to orbit the "asteroid", because you couldn't give it gravity, etc.

See http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/?horizons to create a SPICE ephemeris (also called a BSP or SPK file) for any known asteroid.
